stuff is not an investment [day 282]

I had an eBay business while I was doing freelance work several years ago.  I started eBay for one simple reason.  I sell my Syquest Sparq drive and cartridges.  Back in the late 90’s, the Iomega Jaz drive was the industry standard for backing up you data.  They were great, but they cost a lot of money.  The drive was around $400 and the 1GB cartridges were $100.  I was really excited when Syquest came out the Sparq drive.  You could get the drive for half the price of a Jaz and the cartridges were 3 for $100.   I bought one the same week they came out on the market.  They were running a design contest and the prize was 50 cartridges.  Wow!  With those I could get rid of all my 3.5 disks and a lot of my cd’s.  To the drawing board!  Digital, of course.

I entered 3 designs, and here’s the one that yielded me 50 of these amazing cartridges.

Yes, by today’s design standards, it’s lame, but it got me over $1,500 in digital storage.  Sweet!  As one of my friends said back then, I had enough of these to tile a small room.  That was all great until these drive started having big time issues.  The company replaced my drive at one point, but I already knew these were not going to last.  I joined eBay, sold off my new, unopened replacement drive and all of the cartridges for just under $2,000.  Before ceasing my good eBay business, I had done over 5,000 transactions and at several points, was a power seller. I’m the ugly neighbor [day 263]

I know my neighbors must cringe when they drive by garage when the door is open.  I’m clearly the ugly neighbor.  Since I’ve been downsizing in the cold weather, everything was pitched out into the garage, in anticipation of some warm weather to get everything to the appropriate places.  Where are those places?  Anywhere but a landfill… the thrift store, the food pantry, craigslist, and last but not least, freecycle.

I needed to not only get the stuff out, but I needed to find one specific can of paint in the vast mountains of paint cans in my garage.  Well, after pulling all the paint out onto the driveway in preparation to give it away, I could not find the one can I needed for my kitchen ceiling.  Seriously?

I didn’t count, but I know there was well over 100 cans of paint.  I got rid of 99% of what I had.  I really wanted to do something fun and creative in the process of getting it out of my garage, but I found myself in gridlock, paralyzed by the sheer amont of stuff in my garage.  There’s just no time to creatively get rid of my stuff, so I started placing all of it on the driveway and listing it on freecycle as I cleaned it out.  About 80% of the stuff is gone already, in less than a day.

I collected coats, blankets, food and miscellaneous stuff from friends an neighbors to donate to the homeless and impoverished.  All of that is in my car and will be delivered to the appropriate destinations today.  It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.  Less stuff feels good.  And just so I’m not tempted to collect more junk, I gave away the shelving unit that I cleared off yesterday.  No empty shelves to refill, just nice, clean empty s p  a     c         e.   Continue reading

I bought something [day 259]

Yes, I made a purchase.  I think it was the right thing to do.  You tell me…

I hired a painter to paint all of the trim, doors and baseboards in my house, along with a few other painting jobs.  He’s doing a great job, but having your house painted basically requires moving.  You don’t have to move it all out of the house, but you do have to move it all away from the walls.  It’s a good, forced spring cleaning.  Does anyone actually do that anymore?  Spring cleaning is something I remember from the 70’s, the smell of Pinesol for days and rooms we couldn’t touch for weeks.  When spring hits, I get spring fever, and the last thing I’m going to do is clean my house.  It should be winter cleaning.  Okay, I’m done with the rabbit trail.

The painter has been getting the paint, but he was working, I was running some errands and we needed a gallon of Black Bean flat paint from Sherwin-Williams.  I was driving right by there, so my choices were to make him stop painting and go get it or I could pick it up for him.  I chose to pick it up for him.  It just made sense.  The whole painting job makes sense.  He needed to work, I needed to get the painting done, and it’s not something I was ever going to get done on my own.

The brown paint looks great, as he used it to paint over my colorful thought bubbles mural.  I miss my mural a little bit, but the bright, wild colors were not calming.  The new color is calming and the consensus is that I have an adult room now.  It was getting a little old hearing people ask which of my kids’ room it is.

Am I in trouble?

hello, my name is jody and I’m a hoarder [day 252]

So this is the third day we’ve been “iced” in.  This is clearly not snow, as you can walk on top of it.  I even saw a video of a kid ice skating in the street.  My kids are bouncing off the walls and I’m so ready for this mess to go away, and them to be back in school.  I’ve been working from home most of these three days, but I’ve also spent a little time cleaning too.  It’s forced cleaning, and here’s why.

I finally hired someone to paint all of my doors and baseboards.  As much as I would like to do this myself and save the labor cost, I simply don’t have the time, or the desire, to do it.  My time will be better spent doing other things and the guy I hired really needs the work, so much that he drove here in the icy crap to work in my house.  It’s a win-win.

Having baseboards and closets painted is basically like moving.  It’s a good opportunity to not only clean everything, but to purge.  I still have way too much stuff and I need to keep downsizing.  I’m a hoarder.  Not to the extent of the people on the TV show, as those are the most extreme cases, but I’m a low level pack rat.  The few rooms I have downsized are really making me think how much stress and hassle it is to own so much stuff.  It’s simply not needed.  I listed a bunch of stuff on freecycle and it all went within a day.  I have so much more to get rid of!  Being in my house with all this stuff is making me crazy!

My garage is now the “last stop” in the process of purging.  Everything from my house is going out to the garage, from there, it will be sorted, purged then the remaining items will be organized, cleaned and brought back in.  I can honestly say, not much as come back in.

When purging and organizing you stuff, here’s a few tips that might help.  I could write a whole book on everything I’ve learned through this process, but I’ll just share a few of the major points.

Sort the mess.

Have bins or boxes set up for all of the “stuff destinations” you have planned.  You’ll stay in gridlock, shuffling things around with some basic sorting plans.  Here was my destination list:

  • freecycle
  • eBay / craigslist
  • keep
  • thrift store
  • recycling
  • trash
  • someone I know that wants this

Waste not, want not.

Keep in mind that you might not want this stuff, but that doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t be blessed by having it.  It’s not any additional work to take things to a thrift store versus the city dump.  And freecycle?  People will come get it right from your house, you don’t even have to take it anywhere!  Less physical work and just a small amount of time on the computer listing it on freecycle.org.

What to keep, what to part with.

This is the most difficult part of the process.  My first question to myself is, “Can I easily get this again if I need it?”  Other questions might include, “When is the last time I used this?” or “Do I see a need for this in the near future?”  Go through this process.  If you’re hung up on an item, put it in the keep bin.  Once you’ve done this process once, go through it again.  I sometimes make 4 or 5 passes through my stuff.  I’ve purged a lot and so far, I’ve had no regrets of anything I gave away.

Staying organized.

Once you’ve purged a room, keep the clutter out by having an area to put things.  My garage is the “catch all” for every room.  The clutter goes out there in a designated spot, and rarely does any junk make it back into the house.  When organizing a room, don’t pack everything in, leave space for a few new things and space to stay organized.  Also, when cleaning out a room, take everything out.  Start from scratch.  It’s easier and you will be able to purge more and organize more easily.

Again, this is not a comprehensive list, but it’s a few of the biggest helpers in downsizing.  I have to say, it’s a long process, but it feels really good!

what retailers should you support? [day 222]

I found myself being irritated at the grocery store, stirring over the little yellow tags again.  (day 160… trained shopping monkeys)  Upon a very deliberate observation, I would guess 60% or more of the little yellow tags are ‘low price‘ tags and not ‘sale‘ tags.  How am I supposed to grocery shop for the best prices?  My kids have been yellow-tag-trained too, as they shop thinking anything with a yellow tag is one sale.  Isn’t marketing wonderful?

Even with the irritation, I have found a few retailers that are doing some really good things.  Competition is fierce and I think all retailers succumb to the manipulative marketing at some point or another.  Here’s a few retail stores I would support, you know, if I could shop.  😉  This is not a comprehensive list, just a few I’ve run into lately.

Lowe’s hardware store. Of any shopping I might miss, I do miss my home improvement / hardware stores.  I’m going to be a little generic here since I’m not sure how public this information is, as some companies do things under the radar to stay out of the corporate ball of red tape.  Lowe’s has not only donated the materials, but also the labor to add restrooms, showers and laundry facilities to a local homeless shelter.  Not only that, but finishing off the rooms, painting, and many other details too numerous to mention.  Need some screws?  Go to Lowe’s.

Again, probably under the radar, but not sure, Market Street grocery store donates a lot of leftover foods to shelters in the area.  There’s a lot of stores putting perfectly good food in dumpsters, but not MS.  Shopping at Market Street is a treat, as it’s a little on the pricey side for my shopping habits, however they carry foods you can’t find anywhere else.  Their cafe is also a great deal for lunch or dinner, as the prices are good, portions are big and the food is great.

Yes, Kroger.  Even though I’m not so happy about their little yellow tags, they still do good things for the community.  On day 55, I blogged about how Kroger gives away $1 million dollars a year to organizations that help people in need.  All you have to do is print their little bar code and have it scanned when you shop to support organizations in your area.

I don’t know the motivation of any of these stores, but I do know when I choose where to shop, I want to know I’m not just making some fat pockets for a few executives that don’t need more money.  I want to support businesses that strengthen the community, minimize waste, treat their employees well and participate in the good of people.  :)

paint the town red… or just settle for painting my bathroom brown [day 186]

I’m on vacation this week, or as some might call it, a staycation.  I have a few projects to get done around the house, things I can do without spending money or shopping.  I have about 10 outlets that need replacing, as they won’t hold a plug.  I have all the stuff in the grage to do this task, and I have for about 2 years now.  I even have the black one that goes on my fireplace, nicely matching the slate tile.

What I would really like to do is finish up a few painting projects.  I can’t do this without buying paint, and I can’t buy paint, as that would be retail shopping.  The only room that really needs painting badly is my master bath.  It’s been 80% painted for the entire 4 years I’ve been in the house.  The water closet room still has the original mid 90’s southwest style wallpaper and border with popcorn ceilings.  Now I have paint, lots of paint, but not enough of any one color to do a room.  My paint is leftovers from home projects, church projects, oops paint, hand-me-down paint… you get the picture.  I also have a wall to paint in the upstairs loft room.  I guess I’ll just have to get creative!  I have enough red paint to paint the town red, but not enough other colors to do what I would like to in the house.  I’ll keep you posted.  :)

global-give-green, an exercise in repurposed art [day 139]

These small pieces of art are made on painted MDF panels that were about to be thrown in the trash.  The words are cut out of magazines, the leftover magazine skeletons went to the recycling bin.  Most of the paint is leftovers from other art projects.  Most of the painting embellishments and lines were painted with pizza boxes leftover from lunch.  The photos are just snapshots, I need to take some good photos of them.  😉

the challenge: day 2

I had to work this morning and this afternoon, and tonight, we are driving to Mexico.  I’m typing my update in the car.  And no, I don’t have one of those fancy wireless internet things, I’m just typing on the computer.  I can upload later.  I can’t wait to get to Casa Hogar Elim in the morning!  I bought a jump rope and some sidewalk chalk before I started the challenge.  Next time I will have to be more creative on what to bring.  I did buy a bunch of flashlights to do the light painting with the kids.  I even taped color gels on them and color-coded them with duct tape.  I can’t buy batteries though, can I?  Hmmm, didn’t think about that.  They came with a set, but they won’t last a year.  Batteries do not qualify for food or toiletries.  When I can make purchases, I suppose looking into the rechargeable batteries makes the most sense.  The initial cost would be more, but less waste and I would probably save money in the long run.

I had an interesting exchange with my boss today.  He bought a gift for this little boy he’s been mentoring and asked if I would help him wrap it.  I know what you’re thinking and yes, I did.  I jumped right up on my soap box!  Wrapping paper?  Gift bags?  He obviously does not read my blog or my Facebook page.  Have we met?

Status update: Giving a gift?  Instead of wrapping paper, why not use a green bag?  It’s $1 and can be reused over and over again.  The average gift wrap/bag cost about $3.  If you give 20 gifts a year, you will save $40 and save more of the planet.

There are many creative ways to give gifts without all of the paper waste associated with the process.  Feel free to post some comments with your “green gift giving” ideas.  I would be happy to pass them on to my blog readers and my boss.  :)
